Off Campus Work Permit

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is introducing a new system that will change the current process for applicants who are confirming their eligibility for an off-campus work permit. As of June 25, 2008, students applying for an off-campus work permit can no longer confirm their eligibility (full-time study status and satisfactory academic standing) through paper forms. Instead, they must register online and confirm their eligibility electronically.

For more information, students can contact their Designated Institutional Representative or visit the CIC website at www.cic.gc.ca/english/e-services/index.asp

To be eligible for this program you must:

  • be studying at a participating post-secondary institution such as Acadia University;

  • have a valid study permit;

  • have been a full-time post-secondary student for at least six of the twelve months preceding your application for a work permit (Note: Participation in an ESL program or High School cannot be included in this calculation);

  • be currently registered as a full-time student;

  • be in satisfactory academic standing of 2.0 or above (over the past 6 months); and

  • continue to fulfill the terms and conditions of your study permit and work permit.

  • You are NOT eligible to apply if you are:

  • participating in a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program or Government of Canada Awards Program funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT);

  • receiving funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA);

  • registered in an English-as-a-second-language (ESL) or French -as-a-second-language program;

  • a visiting student or exchange student; or

  • have failed to comply with the conditions of your work or study permit.
