There is no such thing as a straight career path…

Do you remember when you were little and got asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. Even at such a young age, we were encouraged to determine our career path. That’s crazy! Career paths aren’t a straight line – nor should they be! And it’s more than okay to begin university knowing you want a great career but not having any idea what that might be!
In the past, people typically chose a career, worked in that career for 35 years, then retired. Today’s reality is far different. You will likely have an average of 12 careers throughout your working life! Most of you won’t embark on your first career until you’re 25 years old and, at that point, 93% of you will have different career expectations than you did when you were 17!* This change in expectations isn’t because you are indecisive, it is because you have taken the opportunity to learn – and learning is an integral piece to your career path!
At 17, most of you think that career success is a straight path, and that if you stray from that path, you have somehow made a mistake, or done something wrong. As well, when you begin university, you may choose a degree program simply because your parents want you to, or because your friends choose it. If you love it, that’s great, but don’t suffer through four years of a degree that you dislike or to which you are not suited because you are afraid to stray from what you think should be a straight path.
As you learn, you realize that you are going to be making career choices constantly and none of them are ‘wrong’ – no career decision is fatal! As well, explore different degree options, try out a variety of courses, even switch programs. At Acadia, we strongly encourage that exploration and we make it easy to do that. About 30% of our students graduate in a program different than the one in which they started!
Now is the time to discover yourself, look outside the box, find your interests! Don't 'pigeon hole' yourself because you are afraid to make a ‘wrong’ choice!
So, if you find yourself feeling nervous about your future and undecided about what you want to do, you are not alone! Give yourself a pat on the back because you’re doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing, learning!
